Anaphoric arguments of discourse connectives: Semantic properties of antecedents versus non-antecedents

چکیده
We have argued extensively in prior work that discourse connectives can be analyzed as encoding predicate-argument relations whose arguments derived from the interpretation of discourse units. All adverbial connectives we have analyzed to date have expressed binary relations. But they are special in taking one of their two arguments structurally, and the other, anaphorically. As such, interpreting adverbial discourse connectives can be understood as a problem of anaphora resolution. In this paper we study the S-modifying adverbial connective “instead” and what, in the context, does and does not serve as antecedent for its anaphoric argument. This work extends earlier work investigating syntactic patterns of anaphoric arguments across a range of adverbial discourse connectives and the reliability with which these arguments can be annotated. The current work establishes, for 100 successive corpus instances of “instead”, lexico-syntactic features of the antecedents of their anaphoric arguments that can be automatically annotated and therefore used to distinguish actual antecedents from potential competitors in the context.

EFL Learners' Sensitivity to Linguistic and Discourse Factors in the Process of Anaphoric Resolution
The readers' ability to integrate current information with given information has been considered as an important component of reading comprehension process. One aspect of this integration process involves anaphoric resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of anaphoric resolution, focusing on inferential rigidity of different types of anaphoric ties. Ninety EFL learner...
متن کاملDemonstrative Pronouns in Natural Discourse
We examine demonstrative pronouns in a portion of the Santa Barbara Corpus of American English and propose a coding scheme that classifies pronouns with nominal as well as non-nominal antecedents into direct and indirect, depending on whether their referent is the same as the referent/denotation of the antecedent. In agreement with previous studies, we find that demonstratives more often have n...
متن کاملDiscourse Structure and Anaphora : an Empirical Study
One of the main motivations for studying discourse structure is its effect on the search for the antecedents of anaphoric expressions. We tested the predictions in this regard of theories assuming that the structure of a discourse depends on its intentional structure, such as Grosz and Sidner's theory. We used a corpus of tutorial dialogues independently annotated according to Relational Discou...
متن کاملThe Predicate-Argument Structure of Discourse Connectives A Corpus-based Study
Discourse connectives can be analyzed as encoding predicate-argument relations whose arguments derive from the interpretation of discourse units. These arguments can be anaphoric or structural. Although structural arguments can be encoded in a parse tree, anaphoric arguments must be resolved by other means. A study of nine connectives, annotating the location, size, and syntactic type of their ...
